North Carolina Arts Council grant!

Thank you for the Artist Support Grant!
A HUGE thank you to the NC Arts Council for giving me one of their Artist Support Grants! The grant allowed me to purchase a large format flat bed scanner to scan my larger scratchboards and to take a felting class from Scotland's premier felt artist, Moy Mackay. This class was a game-changer for me. With the new skills and techniques I learned, I've been able to create more detailed and higher quality felt art. Since then I have made several pieces - one was accepted into a national juried show in Norfolk, VA, and the others have been in the Cary Gallery of Artists. Other artists have noticed that the class has 'upped my game'. I've even sold a couple!
So I am so very grateful that the NCAC gave me this opportunity. If you're an artist living in North Carolina, you should definitely consider applying for one.
Spring has come back around in 2022!

Welcome Art festivals and outdoor markets, beautiful weather and Central North Carolina pollen! :)
Cary Gallery of Artists has just opened their Small Treasures Show, juried by Dr. Jane Steelman. It is an outstanding show and you should definitely come by and take a look!
Sally has ben busy in all three media, although more so in scratch art, getting ready for some upcoming major shows.
Tom has some special bowls in Ukrainian flag colors. All the artist proceeds for all of his pieces will go to Children's Relief in the Ukraine.
Everyone enjoy the lovely weather and keep collecting art!
Spring is here! Come on 2021!

Spring is the time for rebirth and new beginnings, and after 2020, we could all use some of that!
We are still displaying at Cary Gallery of Artists and we have added gallery space at the Oxford Art Center in Oxford NC.
We also have a joint feature show at the Oxford History Museum in June, so there are lots of ways for NC folks to see our work... in addition to the Cary Gallery Online store at https://cary-gallery-of-artists.square.site/ and shopping through havenhillstudios.com!
Sally has work in the Dallas Metro Arts Contemporary show "Animal, Mineral, Vegetable" which runs through the third week of April, so if you are in Plano, swing by and check out her piece and all the other great art.
April 3rd and 4th Sally will be in the Lido Beach Spring Fine Art Festival near Sarasota FL with an all scratch art display! Come by and say Hi!
Autumn is here and that means Witches, Wizards, and Wood!
Handheld Power and Light, a tiny part of Havenhill Studios, has been hard at work on new wands and cauldrons.
Two Poplar cauldrons, named Toil and Trouble are metalized on one surface and natural wood on the other. Not sure about eye of newt, but they are great for candy or other snacks.
For those whose world rides on a Turtle, there is an Octarine Bowl. It is the eighth color of the spectrum and visible to Wizards and cats.
Doing some Wand-ering around the shop also. The Half-Giant's Wand is large, 12" long and the handle is almost an inch in diameter. Made of Maple with a Rose Quartz insert (you never know when you will miss your old pink umbrella!) it also features dragon-egg texturing on the handle.

The Elder's Wand is Flame Elder and Fire Jasper. At just under 9", it is small and thin, but remarkable!

The Asp's Wand is Macassar Ebony and real Malachite and finished in natural shellac. It is very well suited to those that wear green and black.
For those with a practical and studious nature, try the Walnut Wand Pen. The pommel can reverse ends and be either a wand or a pen, allowing both note taking and spell casting at almost the same time.
Come by the Cary Gallery of Artists and try these out or contact us through this site.
Happy Halloween!
Summer is still hot! New pieces are sprouting everywhere!
Tom has been braving the heat of the shop as much as possible, managing to finish several commissions and a dozen very special pens for Tobacco Wood Brewing. Check them out when you go to Oxford for BBQ and beverages! In preparation for a themed display next month at Cary Gallery of Artists, Tom is working on "Septemburl" pieces. Here are two sneak peeks. One is natural edge eucalyptus and the other is red oak.

Come join us for two "Must See" Sally Exhibits in January
The good news it that they are BOTH in Hillsborough, across the street from each other, and have receptions on the same night!
Friday, January 25th, Sally will be one of the two featured artists at the newly renovated Hillsborough Arts Council Gallery. The show, "Flora, Feathers, and Fur" will pair Sally's scratchboards and paintings by Hannah Dodson. The show runs from January 23rd to February 18th.

Across the street at the Hillsborough Gallery of Art, Sally is one of the artists in the "Resolutions 2019" show. This is a national juried show that takes place every year. The show runs from January 7th to January 31st. For more information, go to https://hillsboroughgallery.com/events/featured-exhibit/
We will see you there!
Coming back to a favorite-

Coming back to a favorite-
A few years ago I was Gilding Guy or the shiny bowl guy. It was great, but I began to chafe a little at the box... or bowl... that I had put myself in. I started making wild shapes and crazy woods and I subconsciously added two new rules to my original two (must use a lathe, must not use a computer). The two new ones were no metal leaf, no metalized color. I worked to develop subtle color changing varnishes and have been very happy with the results.
I was doing a demo during the holidays and this little maple bowl just cried out for some FW ink with an extra boost of metallic blue. i am very pleased to be back in the shiny metal saddle again. I have missed the bold contrasts and crazy interplay of metal and wood grain. I can safely say you will see more of this style again soon! :)
Tom has also started at Cary Gallery of Artists!
I am really excited about this turn (see what I did there?) of events! Sally was juried into the gallery and started September 1. One of the long time members moved out of the area, the gallery had a call for 3-D artists and I was very fortunate to be chosen.
I am all set up and have many wonderful wood pieces at the gallery. Come by and check out all of the wonderful art and don't forget the holiday table and the ornament tree.

Some new things at Havenhill

Gabon Ebony and Malachite Wand
We started a new VERY SMALL part of Havenhill this week. Well, I have been doing the work for quite a while, but always as commissions. I just made a piece that had no owner yet, so I decided to open a separate area for Handheld Power and Light.
It is a very small part of Havenhill Studios and I make custom pens, wands, walking sticks and staffs.
I stock Ash, Oak, both red and white, Ebony, Lignum Vitae, Alder and Willow. I can get many other woods. I also stock a variety of semi-precious stones and crystals for pen caps and walking stick handles. I also have silver, copper and ferrous metals available. I can make pens in all ferrous or totally non-ferrous options, depending on your needs.
